Lead RF Design Engineer, Vancouver West (Shaw – New Build)

VANCOUVER, CANADA

JAN 2010-CURRENT

        Appointed to the principal ALU technical RF team at Shaw project initiation.  Participated in high level customer meetings to devise global coverage objectives for Shaw Communication’s new wireless infrastructure.

        Second in command in presenting technical RF design reviews with Shaw’s primary project team at initiation.

        Promoted to lead the RF engineering team in Vancouver West.  Supervised quality and scheduling of deliverables while being the main customer RF interface.  Consolidated work flow of the local design process which resulted in over 90% acceptance of engineering deliverables with minimum customer change requests.

        Devised the nominal RF network design in adherence to the link budget for over 400 sites in Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver.  Responsible for RF design delivery of 260+ sites in Vancouver West.

        Traveled biweekly to local markets to address client’s needs and built a positive relationship with their engineers and project managers.

RF Design Engineer (Wind Mobile – New Build)

        Participated in and completed construction of Wind Mobile’s wireless infrastructure for Vancouver Phase 1.

        Responsible for the WCDMA/HSDPA RF design in the AWS band for over 60 new cellular sites in Vancouver from search ring definition to RF design specification.

        Studied and created internal engineering guideline on the minimum vertical antenna separation for specific fraction of Safety Code 6 limits to aid RF team in dimensioning lease space and cellular configuration.

        Conducted on-site surveys.  Collaborated with site acquisition associates in determining ideal site position and reviewed candidates on basis of overall RF network design.

        Optimized site configuration to obtain target KPIs using ACCO optimization tool.

        Studied NCell relationships and scrambling code interference.

RF Design Engineer (UMTS Optimization)

        Participated in the launch of T-Mobile’s 3G UMTS network Phase 1 for major West Region markets.

        Responsible for optimization support of San Diego and Sacramento markets for network preparedness prior to commercial launch (569 sites combined).

        Analyzed UMTS RSCP, Ec/N0, Pilot Pollution plots to check for overshooting sectors and worst offenders.

        Liaised with local market cluster engineers in auditing downtilt, azimuth, antenna configuration, and Node-B elements to ensure data integrity for optimization.

RF System Designer (Department of Radio Engineering – New Site Development)

        Responsible for design, specification, and procurement of radio equipment for new cellular towers, rooftops, and in-building projects and repeaters nationally for Mid-West, Central, and Atlantic Regions of Canada.

        Specialized in Inbuilding design with detailed understanding of off-air repeater, sector driven, and fibre optic implementations.  Key project was UMTS overlay onto GSM inbuilding sites and modifying component selection and coupling for multi-band combining.  Troubleshot problematic sites in real time with site technician for effects of intermodulation, uplink interference, and other parasitic characteristics.

        Lead RF in-building designer for high-profile projects including Casino Niagara UMTS Integration, Copps Colliseum, Calgary International Airport UMTS Integration, Sunshine Ski Resort, Pacific Mall UMTS Integration, Toronto East General Hospital, and Yonge & Bloor Underground Path Expansion.

        Integrated new sites in real-time and monitored coverage, handover, uplink interference, path balance, and other metrics through remote OSS command handler of the Node-B and RNC with drive tester. 

        Performed SC6 safety simulation and compiled test reports in compliance to Industry Canada standards.

        Personal initiatives included the development of software tools to map GSM channel data to GPS software.
